Our School

We have designed a curriculum meeting the requirements of the American Association for Teachers in German (AATG), the German Advanced Placement Test (AP), the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and the German Language Diploma ( DSD).Our students prepare for college credit exams and study abroad programs. The school is accredited to administer German language exams recognized by German universities, thus facilitating the integration of international families.

Since particular emphasis is placed on teaching German in its cultural and historical context, the school is host to numerous German cultural events, including Oktoberfest, Day of German Unity, Saint Martin’s Day Parade, German Christmas Market, Karneval, Easter and Sommerfest.  Our bakery welcomes students and parents on Saturday morning with typical German goodies like Brezen, Schwarzbrot and delicious pastries.

Our Mission

It is our goal to provide a wide range of German language opportunities starting at an early age and fostering a lifelong interest of the German language and its culture.

Our Vision

The German Saturday School (Deutsche Samstagsschule Houston) has provided greater Houston with almost 40 years of quality German language and cultural classes.

Originally founded in 1986 by three mothers for their young children, the school has increased in size and scope.  Today, we offer a comprehensive program for students of all ages from preschoolers to adults.

Our vision for the future is one of growth, expansion, inclusion, and more education opportunities for all of our students.

Our Library

A vital part of language acquisition is reading. We are fortunate to offer a small but updated library for all age groups. Students, teachers and parents have access to our school library throughout the academic year. The library has a fine collection of German books, magazines and DVDs.  The library serves as one of the central meeting points on Saturday mornings together with a cup of coffee.

To facilitate the access to the students, our teachers also create a Bücherkiste (Box with selected books) with appropriate reading material for their classes.

Students are encouraged to participate in the Antolin reading program that provides points for completing a questionnaire after reading a book.  At the end of the year students will be awarded for their reading effort. Students are introduced to the program at an early age and continue through middle school.

The library holds fundraisers during the year. Funds are used to acquire new books, movies and software, and for special projects, such as upgrading equipment.
