Our Mission

It is our goal to provide a wide range of German language opportunities starting at an early age and fostering a lifelong interest of the German language and its culture.

Our Vision

The German Saturday School (Deutsche Samstagsschule Houston) has provided greater Houston with almost 40 years of quality German language and cultural classes.

Originally founded in 1986 by three mothers for their young children, the school has increased in size and scope.  Today, we offer a comprehensive program for students of all ages from preschoolers to adults.

Our vision for the future is one of growth, expansion, inclusion, and more education opportunities for all of our students.

School Program

Our school was founded in 1986. We are a non-profit institution and offer classes for children between the ages of 2 and 18. In the mornings we teach students with German language skills and in the afternoon language learners. In accordance with the ZfA, (Zentralstelle für Auslandsschulwesen) we offer the exams IVA-A1, IVA-A2, DSD I, DSD II, which enable the student to study at a German university.

Adults: We offer classes levels A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1 with the possibility of certification. These diplomas are often a prerequisite for working, studying and teaching in German-speaking countries.

Support: Families who only live in the U.S. for a limited period of time will find support at our school to prepare their children for reintegration into the German school system.

Emphasis: We don’t just provide a language program, but also a German culture awareness program. Our school is a popular cultural and social meeting place for friends of the German language.

Our Library

A vital part of language acquisition is reading. We are fortunate to offer a small but updated library for all age groups. Students, teachers and parents have access to our school library throughout the academic year.

Inspiring a Love of Reading

Our students begin participating in the German Vorlesewettbewerb (Reading Contest) at an early age and continue all the way through high school. Initiated by the German Language School Conference (GLSC), this nationally recognized project motivates students to read more, and enjoy literature in the German language.
Winners receive official placement certificates, and the top student in each category is invited to New York City to showcase their polished reading on a national stage.
