Our German Cultural Events
When most people hear Oktoberfest, they picture big steins and loud cheers. But did you know this tradition has roots far deeper than just beer?
The Story:
It all began in 1810, when Munich celebrated the royal wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese with horse races, music, and dancing. The party was so joyful that it became an annual tradition — and now, more than 200 years later, it’s still celebrated worldwide.
The Culture:
Beyond the food, Oktoberfest is alive with folk music, colorful parades, and traditional outfits like dirndls and lederhosen — each a symbol of German pride and heritage.
The Values:
At its heart, Oktoberfest is about community, joy, and passing on history and hospitality to the next generation.
Our Connection:
At German Saturday School Houston, our students don’t just learn the language — they step into the stories, traditions, and values that make celebrations like Oktoberfest so meaningful.
